I expected a feminist critique of the porn industry and its insidiously dehumanizing effects. But instead of adopting an opinionated and patronizing approach, the documentary surprises me with its sedate and existentialist tone. Especially when Artem, a law student, speaks in his highly reflective Russian, I almost feel as though I am watching Tarkovsky. I would even venture to say that while porn is thematized, it is carefully backgrounded, at most appearing as another kind of bullshit job. It seems a bit strange or thoughtless, though, for the camera to fail to acknowledge its presence, considering the acts of shooting and viewing are clearly problematic issues for porn.
